About me

I'm Steve Charalambous, a psychotherapist working with individuals and couples in North London and online across the UK

People come to counselling for many different reasons. You may be struggling in a relationship, dealing with anxiety, loss or change, or finding that familiar ways of coping are no longer working.

I offer a calm, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly, make sense of what is happening and begin to find a way forward.

How I work

My approach is collaborative and relational.

I work integratively, which means I use different therapeutic ideas depending on what seems most useful for you. My work is influenced by systemic, psychodynamic and person-centred approaches, with ideas from TA, EFT and CBT where appropriate.

Don’t worry, you do not need to know the details of these models. In practice, this means we will try to make sense of the puzzle together: what is happening now, what patterns keep repeating, and how past experiences may be influencing how you feel, relate and respond.

In couples counselling, I do not take sides. My focus is on helping you both understand what is happening between you, notice repeating patterns and explore what may be getting in the way of connection, intimacy and closeness.

In individual counselling, the work may involve exploring your thoughts, feelings, experiences and relationships in more depth. I may reflect back patterns I notice, ask questions that help you think differently, and help bring more awareness to what may be keeping you stuck. I work with relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, low mood, self-esteem, stress, loss, life changes and other personal concerns.

My background

I became interested in psychotherapy because I wanted to understand how people think feel and act. Especially when life feels difficult, stuck or confusing.

For me the key to well-being is all about relationships. With others but also with ourselves. I believe the quality of our relationships has a profound effect on our happiness, wellbeing and how we experience ourselves.

By understanding our personal history and relational patterns, we can begin to make sense of current difficulties and create more room for self-compassion, autonomy and change.

In addition to qualifying as an individual counsellor, I undertook a two-year Diploma in Relationship Counselling with Relate, one of the UK’s best-known providers of relationship support. This specialist training deepened my work with couples and relationship difficulties.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, MBACP.
